The American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS), founded in 1934, is one of only 24 Specialty Boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Currently, there are about 1000 Board Certified Colon and Rectal Surgeons practicing in the United States. Certification by the ABCRS requires a candidate to be certified by the American Board of Surgery (General Surgery) and complete an additional Residency in Colon and Rectal Surgery and, finally, to have satisfactory performance on rigorous written and oral examinations given by the ABCRS.
The Board has developed a program of "Maintenance of Certification or Competence" which involves the physician's participation in continuing medical education, taking a written examination as well as a periodic review of the physician's practice.
